The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon took the world by storm with its 840-horsepower Hemi V8. But Dodge never intended the Demon to be more than a limited-edition car, and now the last one has rolled off the assembly line.
The final Demon will go to auction along with the last Dodge Viper in a promotion called The Ultimate Last Chance. Dodge will donate all proceeds to the United Way, a charity that supports education, health, and financial stability. Both cars will cross the block together at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast auction at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut this June.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles built the final Demon at its Brampton, Ontario factory, which also produces the Charger and Chrysler 300. After assembly, Dodge sent the Demon to an up-fit center for special touches. It received Viper Red paint and other custom details.
The Demon stood apart because it produced more power than any other Dodge production car of its era. Its 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 made 808 horsepower and 717 pound-feet of torque on pump gas. With 100-octane racing fuel, output climbed to 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet. Dodge designed the Demon for drag racing, which made it unique in the lineup.
The car featured a factory transbrake that held it stationary in gear for quicker launches. It also rode on massive Nitto tires that blurred the line between street and drag rubber. With this setup, the Demon sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph. Dodge even claimed the National Hot Rod Association banned it from competition.
Dodge sold the Demon standard with only one seat and no audio system, but owners could add them back for $1 each. Pricing started at $86,090, which included fees and taxes. That was more than $15,000 above the 707-hp Challenger SRT Hellcat. Dodge built just 3,300 Demons during its single model year.
Although the Demon is gone, the Challenger lineup will receive a refresh for the 2019 model year. Dodge has not confirmed details, but reports suggest the Viper could return within the next few years.
